An Apple a Day Really Could Keep the Doctor Away
New research recently conducted in Britain appears to confirm the old wives tale that ‘an apple a day, keeps the doctor away’. Specifically, the new research implies that eating your recommended daily fruit allowance or even just two pieces of fruit a day can drastically reduce your chancing of developing heart disease.
In fact, the research indicates that it can reduce the potential by as much as 40%. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in Australia according to The Heart Foundation, attributing more than 45,000 deaths to the disease in 2011. Whilst rates have decreased in the last few years, the disease is still the number one killer of Australians. Presented at the European Society of Cardiology congress in Barcelona the research was led by Dr Huaidong Du from the University of Oxford.
The findings were born from a seven year follow-up study of nearly 500,000 people in China, where it was discovered that the larger the quantity of fruit they ate, the more their risk of heart disease abated. Commenting on the findings, Dr Du said: “CVD, including ischaemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke, is the leading cause of death worldwide. Improving diet and lifestyle is critical for CVD risk reduction in the general population.”
The daily amount of fruit eaten by the participants was categorised and recorded as – never, monthly, one to three days a week, four to six days a week or daily. More than 450,000 people in the study were chosen as they had no prior history of heart disease, came from five urban and rural environments and were not taking high blood pressure-lowering drugs at the start of the study.
Over the seven-year follow up period there were 19,300 cases of heart disease and 19,689 strokes – 14,688 of these were ischaemic and 3,562 haemorrhagic. From those studied, it was found that 18 per cent ate fruit daily with an average of 1.5 portions or 150g. Worryingly, 6.3 per cent never ate fruit and given the study represents a mere 0.04 of the Chinese population- that 6.3 per cent is looking very disturbing. The researchers found that compared to people who never ate fruit, those who ate fruit daily cut their CVD risks by 25-40 per cent.
